Local Context
The city of Chicago is no exception to animal abuse even though Illinois has the toughest anti-cruelty laws in the nation. Chicago is a city where violence takes no break and it’s no surprise that animal abuse is connected to Chicago violence. A study by the Chicago Police Department revealed that offenders who were charged with crimes against animals are more likely to commit other violent offenses against human victims. 65% of people arrested for animal cruelty or abuse also had a record for battery against a human.
65% of animal cruelty cases that were reported in Chicago last year were cases of abused dogs. (B.Dogenhardt) The issue of animal abuse is present in Chicago that’s why there is already local and national organizations that help out the animals that have been abused or neglected. By having organizations like The Anti-Cruelty Society, PAWS, and MFA in Chicago it means we are thinking about ending the abuse in the world but first we must start by acting locally. We act locally by reporting of any animal abuse or neglect that we know of. Another thing you can do as a citizen of Chicago and the world is if you rescue an abused animal then help it end its suffering by taking the animal to one of the many locations of the organizations that will give them a shelter, food, and a new opportunity maybe. Students like me can help a lot by ending the cycle of violent humans. We should treat animals in a fair way that the animal is happy and not sad, angry, and depressed all the time. We as students can work together with organizations that fight animal cruelty and abuse in order to raise awareness to the people around us that we should not abuse our pets or any animal ever.
